The Long Island Veterinary Medical Association's members hosted an "Open House Across Long Island" for all pet owners on Sunday, April 30, 2017, from 1:00 pm - 4:00pm. This free event was held at numerous practices across Long Island, so pet owners could take a little time and get to know their vet.
A complete list of participating veterinary practices is listed on this page.
"This is a your chance to learn what happens at a veterinary practice. It is important that owners know their pet's vet because you need to have a vet you have built a relationship with. The veterinarian is there to help you make the best possible decisions regarding your pet's health care," says LIVMA President Dr. Nicole Paccione-Gerbe.
"Just as you would want a physician to help guide you with decisions about your human family's health, a veterinarian can give you information regarding many things like: preventative care, which foods or supplements may be appropriate for your pet's age and weight, can help with behavioral issues that may arise, and of course can help diagnose any illnesses that may affect your pet."
Working with a veterinarian on diagnosing your pet's symptoms is particularly important because many illnesses in pets can seem similar by description. The veterinarian, with their many years of medical training and experience, is the best person to determine which one is affecting your pet and what options are available to treat it.
"The worst time to meet your vet is for an emergency. Establishing a relationship with your pet 's vet will provide for smoother care when there is an emergency, and ensure good preventative planning," says Dr. Dee Hensen, LIVMA's Open House Chair.
During the Open House owners learned the importance of annual wellness care for all pets, and especially for an adopted pet.
